Competency-based learning is a rigorous, systematic academic tool used by educators to measure the efficacy of course content by the measurable ability of students to apply or demonstrate what they have learned efficiently and effectively. Superior to the more commonly practised outcome-based learning , which limits the value of course content to basic or standard expectations and previously established outcomes, competency-based learning also acknowledges and promotes the highest potential within its students to apply what they have learned beyond the boundaries of the course.

The promise of competency-based learning is to bring awareness to the existing capabilities of the student, and help guide them in the process of developing their skills and knowledge in a way that builds esteem and confidence within themselves.
