  3. "I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed. The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow— Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-rubber ball, And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all. He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play, And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way. He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see; I'd think shame to stick to nurse, as that shadow sticks to me! One morning, very early, before the sun was up, I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup; But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head, Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed. And then there's a thing that I must confess, for to be very honest I must. Sometimes he is so small that he can creep through a keyhole, or hide in a cupboard." (Robert Louis Stevenson, A Child's Garden of Verses)

  4. "Clean your cupboard, for there may be some skeleton there you've forgotten." (Chinese Proverb)

Etymology

The word "cupboard" has a pretty straightforward and interesting history! It literally comes from combining two older English words: "cup" and "board."

Originally, in Middle English (around the late 1300s), a "cupboard" wasn't a closed piece of furniture like we think of today. Instead, it was simply an open board or table where people would display their cups, plates, and other dishes. Think of it like a modern-day sideboard or a hutch with open shelves. It was a place to show off your valuable dishware, especially in wealthier homes.

Over time, as people wanted to keep their dishes cleaner and protect them from dust or pests, these "cup boards" started to become enclosed with doors. By the 16th century, the meaning evolved to describe the enclosed cabinet we recognize today, used for storing all sorts of household items, not just cups.

Even though the "p" in "cupboard" isn't pronounced the way it's spelled (it sounds more like "cub-berd"), the spelling has remained true to its origins as a "cup board."
