Examples of Use

Books:

  • "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a spurt of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was on the seventh floor, and Winston, who was thirty-nine, and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.
Inside the flat a fruity voice was droning forth from the telescreen. It was an oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror, forming part of the surface of the right-hand wall. Winston turned a switch and the voice grew a little fainter. The instrument (the telescreen, of course) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely. He moved over to the window: a tiny, Novemberish day, cold and grey, but with a promise of something warmer to come, perhaps. The Ministry of Truth—Miniluv, to give it its proper name—was only three hundred metres away. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, three hundred metres into the air. From where Winston stood he could just make out the words: WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH." (George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four, June 1949)

Etymology

The word "November" comes from the Latin word "novem," which means "nine."

This might seem a bit odd, since November is the eleventh month in our current calendar! The reason for this is that the original Roman calendar only had ten months, and the year started in March. So, in that old Roman system, November was indeed the ninth month.

Even after new months (January and February) were added to the calendar, and later reforms led to the Julian and then Gregorian calendars we use today, the names of these later months, including November, kept their original numerical roots.

The word "November" has been used in English since before the year 1000, borrowed through Old French from its Latin origins. Its meaning has consistently been associated with this specific month of the year.
